What to do when your insurance policy loses its servicing agent

An “orphan policy” is a policy whose selling agent leaves while the policy remains in force. The policyholder may then have to handle claims or policy changes personally, making the process less convenient.

How does it happen? Agent departure is the main cause. The original article cites 2017 Vocational Training Council figures: 7,333 departures among 56,955 agents, approximately 13%. It also refers to HK01 reporting on retirement, a lack of basic salary and the loss of newcomer benefits when business targets are not met. Buying solely to support a friend who has just entered insurance may leave you exposed if that person does not stay in the role; get to know the agent before deciding.

Practical difficulties A servicing agent can coordinate communications, claims forms and supporting documents. Relying heavily on that support, however, may mean overlooking policy terms, claim limits and required documentation. If the agent leaves and a successor does not make prompt contact, ask the insurer about the new arrangement.

Some policyholders discover only when they need help that their original agent left long ago, or that the policy has changed hands several times. Although insurers usually send notices and assign replacements, the quality of follow-up can vary. Updating protection for changing life stages, medical inflation or emerging diseases may also become more cumbersome without a contact person.

Check your policy regularly Do not rely entirely on an agent. Read the terms and covered items when purchasing, and review policy status periodically. Many insurers offer online accounts showing policy information and servicing-agent details. If you do not have an account, look for the insurer’s notification letters; if these have been lost, call customer service.

If your policy is orphaned Contact the newly appointed agent and explain your needs. If you prefer another trusted agent, write to the insurer to request a suitable reassignment.
