Processed food, brain inflammation and DHA: what an animal study found

Instant noodles, luncheon meat and packaged snacks may be convenient, but the original article discusses research into how a highly processed diet can affect the brain. It reports memory problems and inflammation after four weeks in older rats, emphasising the value of reducing processed food rather than relying on supplements.

The study Researchers examined the hippocampus and amygdala in young three-month-old and older 24-month-old rats. Groups received a standard diet, a processed diet or a processed diet supplemented with DHA. The original article lists the standard diet as 32% protein, 54% wheat-based carbohydrate and 14% fat, and the processed diet as 19.6% protein, 63.3% refined carbohydrates—including corn starch, maltodextrin and sucrose—and 17.1% fat.

Older rats on the processed diet showed signs of memory impairment and brain inflammation, including failing to recognise an environment encountered a few days earlier. Comparable inflammatory and cognitive effects were not detected in the younger rats. The researchers considered changes in the amygdala relevant because it helps connect emotion, fear and memory and recognise danger cues.

DHA supplementation Senior author Ruth Barrientos of The Ohio State University expressed concern at how quickly the effects appeared. In older rats, added DHA helped prevent increases in inflammatory activity and substantially protected against memory problems. DHA, docosahexaenoic acid, is found in fish and other seafood and is important for neurological development and function.

The finding is not permission to eat junk food Barrientos warned against interpreting the results as showing that supplements cancel out an unhealthy diet. The focus should be the overall eating pattern. The study was published in Brain, Behavior, and Immunity.

The article describes a Mediterranean-style pattern built around minimally processed vegetables, fruit, whole grains, beans, lentils, nuts, seeds and beneficial fats, especially extra-virgin olive oil. Such patterns can be adapted to cultural or ethical preferences while retaining balance and variety.
